Your First Move - Agentic Storefront Configurations
As of April 18, 2026, here is what Shopify's official documentation confirms about settings and access. Check these before you spend time on the optimization work below.
Confirm you're eligible. Not every store has access yet. Shopify emails merchants when Agentic Storefronts are available to them. If you haven't received that email, go to Settings > Sales Channels in your admin and check for Agentic Storefronts. If it's not there yet, use this time to get your data clean.
Publish your store policies. Shopify requires your Terms of Service, Privacy Policy, and Return & Refund Policy to be completed and published before your store can sell through agentic storefronts. Find them in Settings > Policies. Most stores already have these. Confirm they are live and up-to-date.
Opt in to direct checkout separately. Product discovery is automatic. But for customers to complete purchases directly inside the AI channel without being redirected to your store, you need to enable that manually in Settings > Sales Channels > Agentic Storefronts.
ChatGPT is the exception and routes customers to your own storefront to complete the purchase. AI is the referral. Your store is still the POS. Which means your checkout experience matters just as much as your product data.
Note: Agentic storefront built-in checkouts currently display only to customers based in the United States. International stores can participate in discovery, but direct checkout is US-only for now. B2B-only products are automatically excluded.
Your PDP Was Built for Humans - AI Needs Training
Agentic Storefronts went live in March 2026. This is best available guidance based on how Shopify's catalog works and how AI agents process structured data. The current principles are a foundation. The specifics will evolve.
AI agents don't browse your website the same way a human does. They parse structured data fields and make recommendations based on what they can actually read.
Most brands built their PDPs for human shoppers browsing a website. The same product data now needs to work for an AI agent comparing your product against 50 others in under a second.
A product titled "The Chi Napper" tells an AI nothing. A product titled "Good Dog Chi Napper Small Dog Hammock, 16 in, Cotton Canvas" tells it all it needs to match that product to a shopper asking for beach wave styling products.
If your specs, materials, and attributes live only in your HTML product description, AI cannot reliably extract them. They need to live in structured metafields, the machine-readable layer underneath your storefront that AI agents query.
If the data isn't there, AI will have plenty of other options to choose from. It skips your product and surfaces a competitor who went the extra distance to train it properly.
